Fall 2021 Programming Workshops
- IST 242 Prep Workshop
- Date: Aug. 30, 2021
- Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm
- Room: Westgate W201(Cybertorium)
- Description/Goal: Are you taking IST 242 this semester and want a recap of IST 140? Are you new to the College of IST and took CMPSC 121? This workshop is for you, we cover everything you need to know from IST 140 in order to be successful in IST 242.
- Suggested Level of Experience: Took IST 140 or CMPSC 121
- Bash Workshop
- Date: Sept. 13, 2021
- Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm
- Room: Westgate E205
- Description/Goal: The goal of the workshop is to cover the foundation of everything BASH. We will be learning and discovering different ways to properly implement loops, variables, commands, and conditional programming with shell scripting.
- Suggested Level of Experience: It is recommended that you have taken IST 140 (or a basic equivalent understanding of programming conditions, loops, I/O functions, etc.), and Cyber 100 (or a basic equivalent understanding of UNIX/LINUX terminal+OS). No prior knowledge is required
- PANDAS Workshop
- Date: Sept. 27, 2021
- Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm
- Room: Westgate E208
- Description/Goal: The goal of this workshop is to expose students to pandas, a python library that’s incredibly useful in the world of data science. Even with limited exposure to Python, students will learn how to load in data sets and manipulate and clean data in tables.
- Suggested Level of Experience: CMPSC 131 is recommended, but not required. Basic familiarity of python as a programming language and some of its capabilities are useful, but students can be beginners as well.
- Prerequisite: Students should log in or create an account (can use school email) before coming to the workshop for this site. Also, after students set up a Kaggle account, they’ll need to download the following dataset:

- Developer’s ToolBox Workshop
- Date: Oct. 04, 2021
- Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm
- Room: Westgate E205
- Description/Goal: The goal of this workshop is to help first-year IST or first-time developer students. We will discuss tools to help you in your programming journey like GitHub and Git, IDEs, Helpful resources, and answer questions you may have.

- R Workshop
- Date: Oct. 18, 2021
- Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm
- Room: Westgate E205
- Description/Goal: The goal of this workshop is to expose students to the R environment for the first time, looking at how to bring in and clean data. If time permits, students will be exposed to simple statistical learning topics.
